# The brief

> The highest-leverage field in the whole product. What to put in it, what to keep out of it, and why the AI reads it on every single turn.

The brief is a free-text box on **Settings**, on the **General** tab, just under
the homepage. It is the single
highest-leverage field in the product, and it looks like a notes box, which is
why this page exists.

## What it is for

The AI reads the brief on **every turn**, whichever page you are on when you
ask. It is background, not instructions — the model is
told to treat it as facts about the business rather than as commands.

So the brief is where you stop repeating yourself. Without one, every request
starts from nothing and you find yourself typing "remember we are a bakery, not
a cafe" for the fourth time.

## What belongs in it

Things that are **true about the business** and would change what any page says:

- who the customer is, and who they are not
- what you sell, and what you deliberately do not
- the tone — plain, warm, formal, funny
- anything that must always appear, like a licence number
- anything that must never appear

## Your business's facts

The brief is also where your **facts** go: your locations and addresses, phone
numbers, email, opening hours, the links to your social pages, wherever people
book. It is the one place you state them, and the AI uses them exactly as
written — it never makes one up, and a fact it needs that is not here, it asks
for.

It puts each one on your site **once**, in the part every page shares (the
footer, usually), so your phone number is never typed into five pages.

One thing to know: changing a fact in the brief does not change the site by
itself. The brief is what the AI reads, not what visitors see — so after you
change your opening hours here, ask it to update them on the site.

## What does not belong in it

**Exact design values.** A typeface or a hex colour belongs in the
[theme](/design/theme), which is where the AI sets them *from* the brief. Saying
"our colour is a deep green" in the brief is useful; typing `#1a4d2e` there is
not, because nothing reads it as a colour.

**Instructions for a single request.** "Make the heading bigger" is something to
ask for in the conversation, not to write into the brief where it will be read
on every future turn forever.

## It is one box, on purpose

There is no separate "tone" field or "audience" field. That split has been tried
twice and undone twice: in practice the useful thing is a few paragraphs a
person would actually write, and every division of it created a box nobody knew
which side of to use.

## The AI can edit it

If you tell it something in conversation that clearly belongs in the brief, it
can write it there. Worth checking afterwards — it is your description of your
business, and it should read like one.
