# Your address and your domain

> Every site works from the moment you publish. Connecting a domain you own comes with Pro, takes two DNS records, and rebuilds nothing.

Every site has a working address from the moment you make it. Your own domain is
two DNS records away, and nothing gets rebuilt.

## The free address

A new site gets one ending in `.mightybuilder.site`, live as soon as you press
Publish, with HTTPS already working.

It is a real address. Put it on a card or send it to a customer.

## Adding your own

A domain of your own needs Pro. Connecting it costs nothing on top, and the
`.mightybuilder.site` address works either way — on a free site it is where the
site lives, and search engines index it there.

If Pro ends, your own domain stops showing the site and the
`.mightybuilder.site` address carries on serving it. Go Pro again and the domain
comes back as it was.

**Settings → Domain.** Type the domain you own, and you are given the DNS
records to add at whoever you bought it from.

Once those records are in place, the domain is verified and the certificate is
issued automatically. There is nothing to install and nothing to renew.

## Domains are not drafted

Everything else in the dashboard waits for Publish. A domain does not: adding or
removing one takes effect straight away.

That is deliberate, and worth knowing — it is why the domain screen has an
explicit apply button while nothing else does.

## DNS, in plain words

DNS is the phone book that turns a domain into the machine serving it. The
records you are given are the entry that points your domain at us.

They are added wherever your domain is managed — the registrar you bought it
from, usually. Changes take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to spread
around the internet, and there is nothing to be done but wait.

## While you wait

Your `.mightybuilder.site` address keeps working the whole time. Nothing is
taken away until the new domain is answering.

## Some names are not available

A handful of names on the free domain are reserved — operational ones, and a
short list nobody should be able to claim. You are told at the point you type
it, not after.

## Moving a domain here from another site

Remove it from the first site, then add it to the second. A domain answers for
one site at a time.
